Bringing a Dog from the USA to the UK: Requirements & Timeline

One of the quicker routes — no titer, no quarantine when compliant — but with a strict GB pet health certificate window and a tight vet-administered tapeworm treatment for dogs.

Because the US is a listed country, Great Britain is one of the friendlier hard-country routes: ISO microchip before the rabies vaccination, vaccination at 12 weeks or older, a 21-day wait (day 1 is the day after the shot), and the Great Britain pet health certificate — the only document accepted from the US, completed by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by USDA APHIS. No titer test, and no quarantine when everything is in order.

Two timing traps remain. The certificate is valid for just 10 days — your pet must enter GB within 10 days of it being issued/endorsed. And for dogs, a vet must give tapeworm treatment in a narrow window: no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (1–5 days) before your scheduled arrival, recorded to the hour on the certificate. Cats skip the tapeworm step entirely.

Minimum lead time: about 0.7 months (21 days). Great Britain is achievable in about three weeks from a standing start; the 21-day post-vaccination wait is the floor. The two traps are the 10-day certificate window and the dog tapeworm treatment's 24–120 hour window against your scheduled arrival.

The requirements, in order

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. ISO microchip implanted
    ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before — or the same day as — the rabies vaccination. If your pet was vaccinated before being chipped, the vaccination doesn't count and must be redone, restarting the 21-day wait.

  2. Rabies vaccination (then a 21-day wait)
    Given at 12 weeks (84 days) of age or older, after the microchip. You must then wait at least 21 full days before entering GB — day 1 is the day after the vaccination. A booster with no break in cover needs no wait; a lapsed vaccine restarts the course and the wait.
    21 days is the legal floor. Some vaccines take up to 30 days to reach immunity — ask your vet, and the certificate's 'valid from' date will reflect it.

  3. GB pet health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS
    From the US, the only accepted document is the Great Britain pet health certificate (not a pet passport or EU certificate). A USDA-accredited vet completes it and USDA APHIS endorses it; your pet must enter GB within 10 days of issue/endorsement.
    APHIS counts the 10 days from its endorsement date; GOV.UK counts from the vet's issue date — plan against the earlier of the two so a delay can't void it.

  4. Tapeworm treatment by a vet (dogs)
    A vet must give praziquantel (or a proven equivalent) no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (1–5 days) before your dog's scheduled arrival in GB, recording the product, date and time in the certificate. Cats are exempt.
    The window is measured against scheduled arrival time — if your flight slips past the 120-hour mark, the treatment is invalid and you'll be refused or quarantined.

This is the step most likely to catch dog owners: the 24–120 hour tapeworm window is tied to scheduled arrival time in GB, not departure. If your flight is delayed past the 120-hour mark, the treatment is invalid and your dog can be refused or quarantined. Build in slack, and if travel slips, re-treat. Cats have no tapeworm requirement.

How pets actually travel

From the US, pets enter GB as cargo on approved routes and carriers — not in the cabin — with guide/assistance dogs and chartered private flights the exceptions. Approved routes change and can be seasonal, so confirm the current list on GOV.UK before booking. This route covers England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland follows the EU pet-travel rules instead.
