Bringing a Cat from the USA to Mexico: Requirements

The easy case: a cat needs only a clean carrier and to pass the on-arrival inspection — no certificate, no screwworm rule, nothing to sequence.

Rules last verified against official sources: 2026-07-24

Cats have the simplest possible trip to Mexico: since 2019 there's no health certificate, and the 2026 screwworm certificate applies to dogs only. SENASICA inspects your cat on arrival — it must be in a clean carrier, free of ectoparasites, with no fresh wounds.

Minimum lead time: about 0 months (0 days). There's essentially no timeline for a cat. No health certificate, no rabies proof, and — unlike dogs — no screwworm certificate. Just a clean carrier and a healthy cat for the SENASICA inspection.

The requirements, in order

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. Arrive in a clean carrier for SENASICA inspection
Mexico requires no health certificate or rabies proof to enter — but on arrival SENASICA inspects your pet at the OISA office. It must be in a clean carrier, free of ectoparasites, with no fresh or healing wounds. Disposable bedding, toys and food (beyond the day's feed) are removed and destroyed.

Both directions are easy for cats

Going home is simple too: cats have no CDC dog-import rules and no screwworm-freedom requirement to return to the US. Keep rabies vaccination current for your cat's protection and because your US destination state or airline may ask for proof, but Mexico requires none of it to enter.

FAQ

What does my cat need to enter Mexico?
Just a clean carrier and to appear healthy for the SENASICA inspection — no health certificate, no rabies proof, no screwworm certificate.
Is the trip home easy for a cat?
Yes — cats have no CDC dog-import or screwworm requirement returning to the US. Your destination state or airline may still ask for a rabies certificate.
Why is it harder for dogs?
Dogs need a screwworm certificate to enter from August 2026, and coming home they need a CDC Dog Import Form and screwworm-freedom certification. See the dog version of this route.
