Because Great Britain is a listed third country, a cat's health requirements are light: ISO microchip before the rabies vaccination, vaccination at 12 weeks or older, a 21-day wait, and no titer test. The Brexit change is the document — a GB pet passport no longer works, so you need an EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days before entering the EU.
The requirements, in order
Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.
- ISO microchip implantedISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted and scanned BEFORE — or the same day as — the rabies vaccination. A shot given before the chip does not count and must be redone.
- Rabies vaccination (then a 21-day wait)Given at 12 weeks (84 days) of age or older, after the microchip. You must then wait at least 21 full days before entering the EU — the vaccination day is day 0. Boosters kept up to date on schedule need no new wait; a lapse restarts it.No rabies titer test is needed: Great Britain is a listed third country, so a US-equivalent path applies (no blood test).
- EU Animal Health Certificate issued by an Official VeterinarianAn Official Veterinarian (OV) in GB issues the EU Animal Health Certificate — not every vet is OV-authorised, so book one who is. Your pet must arrive in the EU within 10 days of issue. After entry the AHC covers onward EU travel for 6 months and re-entry to Great Britain for 6 months (or until the rabies vaccination expires).GB-issued pet passports are not accepted for EU entry post-Brexit — using one may get your pet refused.
What's simpler for cats
Cats never need tapeworm treatment — not for Spain, and not even on the return leg into Great Britain (that's a dog-only rule). After entry, the AHC covers onward EU travel and GB re-entry for 6 months, or until the rabies vaccination expires. Enter through a designated Travellers' Point of Entry; Spain refuses animals under 15 weeks.

FAQ
- Can I still use my pet passport to take my cat to Spain?
- No — GB pet passports are no longer valid for EU entry after Brexit. You need an EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC) from an Official Veterinarian, issued within 10 days before entering the EU.
- Does my cat need a titer test or tapeworm treatment for Spain?
- Neither — Great Britain is a listed country (no titer), and tapeworm treatment never applies to cats, including the return to GB.
- Can I bring a kitten to Spain?
- Not under 15 weeks — Spain refuses unvaccinated young animals and vaccinated ones still inside the 21-day wait.
